Selahattin Inal was born in 1924 to baker Haci Sükrü Efendi and Nafia Hanim, in the town of Çankiri. His first instrument was mandolin; he then began studying violin, later taking lessons from his guardian Hakki Derman during his high school years. After high school, he passed auditions at Ankara Radio and was taken on as a violinist, where he worked until his retirement in 1981.
