Suphi Ziya Özbekkan was born in Istanbul in 1887, and was first exposed to music in musical gatherings held by his family. He worked at Ankara Radio, and began composing at the late age of forty-two, but made quick strides in a short time. His works, of which there are nearly fifty, draw their audience with an unequalled richness and powerful expression. He died in 1966.
