Serîf Muhiddin Targan was born in Istanbul in 1892. He took makam and usul lessons from Zekai-zâde Ahmet Irsoy, and Turkish classical music works from Ali Rifat Çagatay. Between 1919 and 1956, he composed several instrumental works and sarkis, which are still performed today. Especially his compositions for ud are technically and stylistically very difficult. He died in Istanbul in 1967.
