Numan Ağa is believed to have been born in Istanbul in 1750, though the date is not known for certain. He was an important tanbur player and composer during the reigns of Selim III and Mahmud II, writing both instrumental and vocal works. Over seventy of his pieces are extant today. He died in 1834 in Istanbul.
